Let’s Talk Lowering Springs

Hello everyone! Today we will be talking about lowering springs. Enjoy!

Lowering springs are my favorite cosmetic modifications for the Explorer ST. Lowering the car gives the car a better stance and helps handling. Lowering springs get rid of the wheel gap that a performance SUV should not have. Many people may be concerned about ride quality. I have seen quite a few people install lowering springs, and they have reported that there hasn’t been a huge difference in ride quality. You will definetly lose a little ride quality, as you are losing suspension travel, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Aftermarket Lowering Spring Comparison

Steeda Lowering Springs

Steeda’s lowering springs retain the factory “rake” of the suspension (rear is higher than front). If you just like the look of the “rake” this is your best option, but keep in mind that they do ride the worst of all the variations.

H&R

H&R was the first company to provide lowering springs for the ExST community and they are the most popular offering. They are a great springs and nothing but positive reviews for them. The advertised drop is 1.6In. front/1.75In. rear.

Lethal Performance

Lethal Performance’s springs were plagued with problems on the earlier builds, but now seem to have been fixed. The advertised drop is 1.8In. front/2.0In. rear.

Eibach

Eibach is another choice. They have the most drop when they settled and ride the best. In my opinion, these would be the ones I would purchase.

Coil Overs

Coilovers look amazing, as they drop the car a lot. I do not recommend them though. The reason is, is when you lower the vehicle past what all the lowering springs do, it is very difficult to get it aligned correctly. Graveyard and FV Coilovers are cheaply built, crappy system. BC Forged is new to the game, and they seem to pretty decent quality. My biggest critique is that BC Forged themselves said that their coilovers are not meant for aggressive driving. Big turn off for me.

Alignment

A lot of shops have a hard time getting lowering springs properly aligned. You do not need any extra parts to get the vehicle properly aligned, no need for aftermarket camber bolts, or anything. A lot of shops miss adjusting this camber bolt pictured above. I recommend printing the above picture and giving it to the shop to insure they get the alignment correct the first time.
