Cobb releases trans-brake support for Explorer ST; Trans-Brake Explanation

Hello everyone! Cobb has just released their transmission brake support for the Explorer ST. Cobb AccessPort users are able to download the trans-brake feature for free, while Goosetuned offers custom trans-brake tuning for an extra $150. If you are a Cobb AccessPort user, I would recommend getting the custom dialed-in trans brake variant from Goosetuned, it will be a lot better and safer that is better than the generic tune from Cobb.

We will see how this stacks up to the ZFG’s transbrake, which has been out for over a year now, and has been extremely successful. For those wondering, HP Tuners (the tuning device for ZFG) also offers the trans-brake for free, but ZFG dials it in better and safer than the generic tune.

What is a Trans-Brake?

For those who are tuned, brake boosting the car to launch it (when you press down the accelerator peddle and brake peddle) has it’s limitations. The Explorer ST has the capability to start pushing the car and overpowering the brakes as they struggle to keep the vehicle stationary and build boost. This is where the trans-brake comes in. A transmission brake places it into reverse and drive simultaneously, allowing the car to stay stationary and build boost. This gives the trans-brake an unique sound. Another pro is that it is easier to preset the launch RPM. Is that safe you may ask? Placing the car in reverse and drive simultaneously has it’s risk. This leads me to my next point.

Is a trans-break right for me?

As I mentioned above, a trans-break has it’s risks. Since the transbrake is a method of locking up the transmission to build boost, it is extremely hard on the transmission and the rest of driveline. It sends a large shock throughout the drivetrain, definitely reducing the life of all the parts and could be betting with the life of the transmission. This is why I would only recommend a trans-break to those who have vehicles where brake boosting is insufficient or those who are chasing the last tenth of a second through the quarter-mile or those who just want the sound and fun.
